Short answer: Sui switched JSON RPC off on Sui Foundation mainnet nodes on Jul 31, 2026, so backends and indexers now read from and write to Sui through gRPC. Fifteen providers serve Sui gRPC (Sui docs, checked Oct 1, 2026). Spectrum Nodes ranks first on our criteria: Sui gRPC served from our own hardware, over a billion requests a day at 99.999% uptime and no breach on record.

Still on JSON RPC? Your calls to Sui Foundation nodes no longer answer, and the provider you move to now is the one you will run on for years. Here is the fix.

gRPC is an API protocol that returns typed protobuf responses and supports streaming subscriptions.

Is JSON RPC Still Available on Sui?

No, not on Sui Foundation mainnet nodes. Sui switched JSON RPC off there on Jul 31, 2026.

Sui's shutdown timeline, per the Sui docs:

DateStep
Jul 31, 2026JSON RPC off on Sui Foundation mainnet full nodes
End of August 2026JSON RPC snapshots stop
End of September 2026Archival fallback cut
Mid October 2026Full removal from node software, code included (planned)

How We Ranked Sui RPC Providers

We ranked providers on the things that break production apps.

  1. gRPC on mainnet today. Sui's migration guide makes gRPC the path for backends, indexers and transaction submission. A provider still "working on it" is a second migration waiting to happen.
  2. Who owns the hardware. A provider running its own servers controls the whole path from your request to the node. A provider renting cloud capacity adds a landlord to every incident.
  3. Uptime at scale, with a published number. Ask for the uptime figure and the daily request volume behind it. A good number on a quiet endpoint tells you little.
  4. Security record. Your RPC provider sees every address you query and every transaction you send. Ask whether it has ever been breached.
  5. Keeping up with upgrades. Sui ships new node software often, and the JSON RPC removal shows how a node release can break apps overnight. Your provider has to roll upgrades fast and warn you first. See why blockchain nodes fall out of sync.

This ranking is written by Spectrum Nodes, so test each provider on your own workload.

Which Providers Serve Sui gRPC?

Fifteen providers serve Sui gRPC. Eight list both testnet and mainnet, and six list mainnet only.

Why Does Spectrum Nodes Rank First for Sui gRPC?

Spectrum Nodes ranks first on the criteria that decide whether your app stays up: hardware ownership, uptime at scale, security record and upgrade handling.

  • Sui gRPC is live. We serve the standard Sui gRPC API, so the official TypeScript SDK's SuiGrpcClient connects when you point its baseUrl at your Spectrum endpoint. You get typed protobuf responses, field masks and streaming subscriptions in place of polling loops. A field mask lists the fields you want, so each response carries only those.
  • Our own hardware. We run our own racks and hardware instead of renting cloud capacity, in Tier III data centers across the US and Europe plus a full bare metal deployment in a rented rack in Singapore. Our racks run Zen 5 Dell servers with two 64 core CPUs and 2TB of RAM each, on 32 gig Fibre Channel switches and two 10 gig ISP uplinks.
  • Uptime at scale. Our infrastructure handles over a billion requests a day at 99.999% uptime.
  • Security. We have never had a breach, and we are SOC 2 Type II attested.
  • Upgrades handled. Our Network Upgrade Calendar tracks upcoming upgrades across 200+ chains and ships as an API, SDK and CLI, so the next breaking node release shows up in your tooling before it lands. We move fast on new chains too: Robinhood Chain was live on Spectrum the day after it launched.
  • More than RPC. On Sui we serve RPC and gRPC. Our webhooks, unified API and the Spectrum CLI cover the other chains in your stack.

Best for: production backends, wallets, exchanges and indexers reading live state, and any team that wants its provider to own the hardware.

How Do the Other Sui gRPC Providers Differ?

The differences sit in testnet coverage and authentication.

  • QuickNode. gRPC runs on port 9000 of your existing Sui endpoint, authenticated with the token from your endpoint URL.
  • ZAN, Ankr, BlockPi, Inodra, Triton One, NodeInfra and Blockvision. gRPC on testnet and mainnet.
  • Chainstack. Not on Sui's provider list. Its own comparison post says gRPC needs a token header on every call.
  • 01.ro, Alchemy, Dwellir, Natsai and GetBlock. gRPC on mainnet only, so you test against another endpoint.

For providers across other chains, see our best RPC provider comparison.

How Do You Move From Sui JSON RPC to gRPC?

Start with a full list of your calls. The rest follows from Sui's method table.

  1. List every JSON RPC call your app makes. Include background jobs and scripts, since those get forgotten.
  2. Map each call to its gRPC method. Most map directly. For the few that don't, read the objects and compute.
  3. Switch to SuiGrpcClient. Point it at your provider's endpoint, pass values by name and use a field mask so each response carries only what you need.
  4. Replace WebSocket subscriptions with gRPC streams. Sui deprecated WebSocket subscriptions in mid 2024 in favour of gRPC streaming. SubscribeEvents, SubscribeTransactions and SubscribeCheckpoints all filter on the server. Streams start at the chain tip and don't resume, so backfill gaps with the matching List call.
  5. Reset your pagination. JSON RPC cursors don't carry over. Fetch fresh cursors from the new API and store them as your resume point.
  6. Check your libraries. Sui's guide says dApp Kit and the Kiosk SDK don't accept SuiGrpcClient yet, so follow its guidance for those two.
  7. Test on testnet, then cut production over. JSON RPC is already off on Sui Foundation nodes, so don't count on it as a fallback.

suix_getBalanceStateService.GetBalance
Dry runsTransactionExecutionService.SimulateTransaction
suix_getStakes, suix_getValidatorsApyNo direct method: read the objects and compute

Should You Use gRPC or GraphQL on Sui?

Use gRPC for backends, indexers, streaming and transaction execution. Use GraphQL RPC for frontends and filtered or paginated reads.

Sui's blog (March 24, 2026) lists gRPC, GraphQL RPC and the Archival Store as generally available. Spectrum Nodes serves Sui gRPC for your backend and indexer traffic.

FAQ

What is the best Sui RPC provider in 2026? On our ranking criteria (gRPC on mainnet, hardware ownership, uptime at scale, security record and upgrade handling), Spectrum Nodes ranks first. We serve Sui gRPC from our own hardware at 99.999% uptime across over a billion requests a day, with no breach on record.

Is JSON RPC still available on Sui? Not on Sui Foundation mainnet nodes. Sui switched it off on Jul 31, 2026, and planned full removal from node software, code included, for mid October 2026. Move backend calls to gRPC and frontend reads to GraphQL RPC.

Can I run production on a Sui public node? No. Sui says its public endpoints are rate limited and meant for development and testing. Use a provider endpoint for production traffic.

How do I start with Spectrum on Sui? Create a free Spectrum account, point SuiGrpcClient at your Spectrum endpoint and start porting calls. Object and balance reads map directly to LedgerService.GetObject and StateService.GetBalance, so start there.
